And, they all have a connection to our own perennially sunny San Diego. From tongue tied introductions to starry eyed, head in the clouds bliss, there's one here for just about every occasion. "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" - Jim Croce It's one of my favorite things about love. For centuries, people have been setting their words and feelings to music. And yet, there's always room for one more. The mixture of acoustic guitar and strings here gives the song a late night feel. It's definitely soft rock, but the sentiment can't be argued with. The title of this early seventies classic says it all, and eloquently. "Scotch And Soda" - Kingston Trio Dave Guards lounge folk classic perfectly captures the nuances of new love. The feeling of walking on air, the feeling of wonderment, the feeling of being the luckiest person on earth - it's here. The song is littered with alcohol references, cementing the lounge scenario, but the heartfelt vocal keeps the song from becoming a novelty number. The spare arrangement, consisting of a stand up bass, an acoustic guitar, and only the lightest touch of a percussive brush stroke, works to create an intimate atmosphere. You could slow dance with your significant other, or simply take in the lyrics. Either way "Scotch And Soda" is a perfect song to start an evening. If you have an acoustic guitar, sing this one to your lover they will be impressed. "Lockjaw" - Rugburns A perfect midtempo acoustic rocker from the pen of Steve Poltz. It doesn't get more universal than a person having trouble expressing themselves. With his typical clever wordplay Steve paints a good picture of the confusion and inner turmoil that most might call yearning. If we all wrote songs this catchy about it, life would be very good indeed. Everybody that's ever liked another person knows what he means when he sings " ...my stomachs tied up in knots...". "All My Only Dreams" - The Wonders From the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack "That Thing You Do", this ballad co-written by Rick Elias (look for him in the State Fair Orchestra scenes!), completely captures the innocence of the early sixties. The middle eight is a perfect example of youthful yearning, with it's soaring backing vocals and Phil Spector production touches. Yes, It's dated, but here at least that's the point. It's the perfect summer could've been oldie, just right for sunsets and other quiet moments. "This Poem Sucks" - Mike Myers w/ David Knowles, Carl Rusk & Paul Sanchez From the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack "So I Married An AxeMurderer", and featuring Mission Hills native Carl Rusk (also a co-writer), this poem set to beatnik styled cool jazz is best remembered as the scene in the movie where Mike Myers (and the others) serenades Nancy Travis. He's right of course, the poem does suck. But in it's own quirky way, it's an endearing look at the side of love where you'll do anything to win a heart- bad poetry? A mariachi band? A skywriter...ah, the things we do for love...
